With over 250 million pieces sold, American Modern by Russel Wright is this country's original entry in modern style of dinnerware. It was created by the influential American industrial designer and artist Russel Wright in 1937. Wright is credited with being the one most responsible for the American shift in taste toward modern design in the mid 20 th century, and American Modern was his most bold statement in that effort.

The initial line consists of fourteen of the original most popular and useful pieces including dishes, bowls, serving platters, serving bowls, tea set and a unique new coffee mug, all in bold mix-and-match colors carefully chosen by Russel Wright for their food presentation drama and bold modern flair. Chartreuse, coral, sea foam, granite and white have been carefully matched to original line colors.

Russell Wright and Bauer Pottery had a relationship that spanned 60 years, it’s only right that Bauer should be bringing this iconic line back to the market. Bauer Pottery started in Louisville, Kentucky in the late 1880s. The company flourished when it moved to Los Angeles and was known for creating simple, beautiful stoneware from the late 1880s to the early 1960s. Bauer Pottery became a staple of the American home for many decades, creating a line of dinnerware and garden flowerpots inspired by Southern California.

After the depression, Bauer Pottery introduced new, rich colors which became an immediate success. Several companies all over the US began following in Bauer’s footsteps. Located just minutes from the original plant, the work of J.A. Bauer has been reintroduced in Los Angeles. The new Bauer line, Bauer 2000, is being produced using original pieces as molds with an emphasis on items originally manufactured by Bauer in the 1930s and 40s.
