I love to toss a few cloves into the braising liquid (usually beer) that I use for pork ribs or pork shoulder.

These aromatic dried flower buds are from a tree native to Indonesia and are picked just as they are turning pink. Used as a spice they can be ground or used whole. To substitute whole cloves for ground, simply grind in a spice grinder. Three whole cloves equals about ¼ teaspoon of ground.
Try making pomanders at Christmas time! Stick whole cloves into oranges or lemons and hang around your house or on your Christmas tree with ribbons.
