This 2005 Elena Fucci Aglianico del Vulture Titolo Red Wine from Basilicata is raised on the side of the extinct volcano, Mt. Vulture - so that's cool. While you may get a little bit of sweet plum on the nose and vanilla on the palate, you can expect a whole lot of tar, volcanic ash, and nice, succinct tannins.

Towering over the Villa Rotondo, the Fucci winery is at the epicenter of the Aglianico del Vulture region of Basilicata. The black soil perched at 650 meters above sea level (the highest vineyards on the mountain) is actually the remains of the extinct Vulture volcano. Thanks to the climate and the porous soil, the Aglianico grapes are some of the driest in all of Italy.
