Thanks to Giacomo Bologna –the man responsible for Piedmont’s Braida Winery–the Barbera grape skyrocketed in the 1960’s after he proved that under the right conditions, Barbera could be one of the highest ranking wines in the world. By careful planting and aging the wine in small French barrique barrels (this helps give the otherwise low tannic wine a little oomph) he created a wine with an alarming depth of flavor and more complexity than this grape had ever produced.
We like this 2005 Braida Barbera d Asti Bricco dell Uccellone from Piedmont with pasta primavera packed with as many veggies as you can muster.
